MFBF Statement on Possible Withdrawal from NAFTA

“Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) is extremely concerned that President Trump’s administration is considering withdrawing the United States from North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). A decision that we would strongly oppose,” said MFBF President Kevin Paap. “Minnesota farmers and ranchers depend upon this critical trade agreement as Canada and Mexico are two of the three largest markets for Minnesota agricultural products - accounting for 27 percent of Minnesota’s agricultural exports. To disrupt this market would be devastating to farmers and ranchers during a time where agriculture is already facing a challenging economic environment.”

“During President Trump’s recent meeting with farmers, he emphasized his attention to improving opportunities in agriculture,” said Paap. “However, while there are opportunities to modify and modernize the current NAFTA agreement, withdrawing from this trade agreement would severely and negatively impact Minnesota’s farmers and ranchers.”
