Hicks Wins Minnesota Farm Bureau Collegiate Discussion Meet

The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) hosted the 12th annual Minnesota Collegiate Discussion Meet. The competition was held Saturday, November 19 as part of the 98th MFBF Annual Meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington. 

This year’s winner was Jakob Hicks of Tracy in Redwood County attending Southwest Minnesota State University majoring in agronomy. The runner-up was Johnna Knorr of Pelican Rapids in West Otter Tail County attending the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities majoring in animal science and agribusiness.

Undergraduate students qualified at regional competitions held at South Central College – Mankato, Southwest Minnesota State University – Marshall, Ridgewater College – Willmar, University of Minnesota - Crookston and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Two from each college competition advanced to the state meet. Students participated in two rounds and a final and were judged on their basic knowledge of critical farm issues and their ability to exchange ideas and information in a setting aimed at cooperative problem solving. 

The state winner receives an expense paid trip from the Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation sponsored by Christensen Farms to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s (AFBF) Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Leadership Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, February 10-13, 2017 to participate in the national competition. The winner also receives $500 scholarship and the runner-up a $250 scholarship from the Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation sponsored by Gislason & Hunter.

Other finalists included Trent Dado from Amery, Wisconsin attending the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and AJ Quad of Westbrook in Cottonwood County attending Ridgewater College.
