Strengthening our Voice Together

Congratulations! Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) has achieved an overall membership gain for 2014. With over 3 percent gain in total membership, MFBF has also gained “Navigator” status from the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Thank you to everyone who helped us to reach our goal of a membership increase. By joining Farm Bureau, members help us speak with one voice for agriculture. Whether we speak to elected officials, the media or our children’s classrooms, coming together to represent agriculture is essential for rural America. By working together, Farm Bureau volunteers, staff and Farm Bureau Financial Services (FBFS) staff and agents were able to achieve this goal. Please join us in celebrating this achievement at the MFBF 96th Annual Meeting November 20-22 in Bloomington at the DoubleTree Hotel.

Friend of Farm Bureau Award

This past month we have been presenting the Friend of Farm Bureau award to individuals who have supported Farm Bureau issues, as demonstrated by their voting records. The voting records were based on issues selected by the American Farm Bureau Federation Board of Directors. Members of the Minnesota delegation who received the 2014 Friend of Farm Bureau award are Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken and Representatives Tim Walz, John Kline, Erik Paulsen and Collin Peterson.

Your Voice Matters

MFBF will continue to be active in the fight against the “Waters of the U.S.” (WOTUS) proposed rule issued by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers (the Corps). The comment period on the proposed rule will end on November 14, and Congress returns to Washington for a lame-duck session around November 12.

After the comment period closes, our Farm Bureau members need to call to Senator Klobuchar and Senator Franken and ask them to support legislation (H.R. 5078) to prevent the EPA and the Corps from implementing the WOTUS proposed rule.

Please call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to our Senators. A simple, quick phone call could be similar to the following.

“Hello. My name is _____. I am a constituent and my address is _____. I am calling to let Senator ________ know that we need their support of H.R. 5078 to stop the EPA and the Corps of Engineers from implementing the ‘Waters of the U.S.’ proposed rule. The proposed rule will allow the EPA to dictate land-use decisions, and it will make it more difficult and costly for me to farm. I hope farmers and other landowners can count on Senator ____’s support of agriculture and ‘Ditch the Rule’ to prevent EPA and the Corps from implementing the WOTUS proposed rule.”

It is also critical that you tell the EPA that their proposed rule is a severe overreach of their authority and will prevent you from taking care of your land.
